Nova Scotia and New Brunswick have been selected to host the 2023 International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) World Junior Ice Hockey Championship in Halifax and Moncton from December 26, 2022 to January 5, 2023. The tournament was originally scheduled to be played in Russia, but the IIHF has removed Russia’s hosting rights.
Nova Scotia previously hosted the IIHF’s World Junior Championship in 2003 and is a proven leader in hosting international events. The government-wide Nova Scotia Event Strategy positions our province to continue to host large-scale events like the World Juniors.
This event is exactly what our Province needed. Sport Tourism Canada evaluated the economic impact of the 2019/20 World Juniors in Vancouver at $44 million, with an increase to GDP of $26 million. Investing in the World Juniors will help our province rebound from the pandemic, celebrate an authentically Nova Scotian game, and inspire the next generation of hockey players in our region.
